Let's face it, life can be stressful. That endlessly repeating playlist called a workweek, can drive you to the cringeworthy point of insanity when you can feel your brain exploding. Sometimes the only cure to this seemingly mundane cycle is to find the nearest exit sign and fucking bolt. This week my exit sign came in the form of a crowded second floor house show in Charleston, SC. When the front door opened it was like entering a time machine and traveling to what I imagine a perfect summer in the late 1960s might have looked like. A sea of young smiling faces, drink in hand, and melting away to the raw rock sound of the Camel Blues Band, a psychedelic rock group from Charleston's Makeout Reef lineup.
From the minute the first guitar riff soared through the audience's ears, this rock quartet had the crowd in a trance. This brotherhood of psychedelic revivalists are bringing genuine rock and roll back to the low country. Camel Blues Band, the love child of David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), is a perfect blend of the smooth and melodic psychedelic sounds of the 60's and the raw garage sound of the 90's.
What is really notable when this group takes the stage is their chemistry. Any group of people who play instruments can make music together, but the music formed by united musicians is truly art. From the flawlessly executed unisons, breakdowns, and solos to them simply dancing around with each other you can tell these guys are close.
When a band is one, the room is one. Looking around the room it was impossible to not notice everyone dancing away from their stressful distractions to a rare state of living in the moment.
Take a break from your everyday stress and go enjoy the Camel Blues Band. They are a live experience you do not want to miss.
